Lessons are sliding scale, $60-100 an hour

Kal loves to guide students of all ages [including children as young as 3 through adults] and experience levels [beginner, self taught, intermediate, advanced and continuing growth] via private or semi-private lessons. Choose a lesson on a specific topic or find a trajectory for the lesson together during the session.

Pedagogy: Kal teaches through guided exploration. He gives students the tools they need to troubleshoot their own problems rather than teaching one "correct way" of making art. He encourages his students to think with a growth mindset. We all learn and grow from our mistakes.

Currently, all lessons are offered digitally over Zoom. If your child is younger than 12, please be there at the beginning to help them set up the technology.

Students come to Kal for expertise around:

  • Navigating the creative process, artist blocks, iterative design, how to use art as a mindfulness practice

  • Practical color theory, info on pigments, color layering

  • Building compositions, tips and tricks and how to finesse, how to come up with ideas for compositions, how to use thumbnails effectively (and what are thumbnails)

  • How to use a medium effectively. Watercolor, acrylic, oil, colored pencils, charcoal, graphite, pastels, mixed media, and other two dimensional formats.

  • Conveying topics via limited resources, no need to let fancy materials be a barrier for fun and creative growth

Testimonials from students

Kal has a lot of respect for the individual artistic process; I really appreciate that as someone who was self-taught. When he gives constructive criticism it’s always about building on what I already have rather than taking away a habit or skill, which is really helpful in a space where it is very personal. Lessons with Kal really elevated my work leaps and bounds pretty immediately. I don’t feel like we’re missing out on anything [over zoom]; It was nice to take him right to my art desk and show him what I am working on.

I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Kal for private art lesson focused on watercolors. Being able to meet with Kal and walk through using watercolors was reassuring and made watercolors feel so much more approachable. We talked about things I enjoyed in other mediums and he used that as a baseline to jump into different watercolor techniques. Kal shared his own approaches to painting with watercolors and encouraged playing with paint as we talked, which made trying out different techniques feel low stakes and fun. What he shared shifted my understanding of how reasonable it was to use watercolors at home, and he shared his expertise regarding nontoxic options for oil paint as well! Kal is wonderful to learn from and I’m looking forward to working with him more in the future!
